Cu mult timp în urmă, la curtea imperială japoneză, împăratul chinez i-a oferit împăratului japonez un urs panda gigant ca simbol al păcii. De atunci, împăratul japonez a încredințat membrilor curții sale (jucătorilor) sarcina dificilă de a avea grijă de animal, îngrijind grădina sa de bambus. În Takenoko, jucătorii vor cultiva parcele de teren, le vor iriga și vor crește una dintre cele trei specii de bambus (verde, galben și roz) cu ajutorul grădinarului imperial pentru a întreține această grădină de bambus. Ei vor trebui să facă față foamei nestăpânite a acestui animal sacru pentru bambusul suculent și fraged. Jucătorul care își va gestiona cel mai bine parcelele, crescând cei mai mulți bambuși și satisfăcând în același timp apetitul delicat al pandei, va câștiga jocul. The player who manages his land plots best, growing the most bamboo while feeding the delicate appetite of the panda, will win the game.
